‘Giving Experts Superpowers’ with Goal-Seeking AI Simulation

Getting somewhere used to mean consulting an atlas. This static book of maps would allow you to trace a route from your origin to your destination and, while it might not be the best way, you would eventually arrive. With the arrival of GPS, you could enter your destination and mapping software could route you on an optimal path. Today, connected mapping software like Waze combine GPS with real-time data about traffic conditions, roadworks, and more to ensure that every route prescribed is optimal even in a world of uncertainty.

In this episode of the IoT for All podcast, Cosmo Tech board member Sam George explains to host Ryan Chacon how AI-guided goal seeking simulation software is a lot like today’s mapping solutions. For the world’s most complex industries, Cosmo Tech’s predictive and prescriptive simulation software helps decision makers to navigate complexity and uncertainty. Just like a driver using Waze, with Cosmo Tech they can anticipate what’s coming and confidently optimize operations, improve profitability, and build resilience.

Below are the key takeaways from the podcast. The full video can be found here.

KPIs, ROI, AND SIMULATION TWINS

Digital twins are great for operational awareness. With a digital twin you can understand what is happening in real time and even learn why it is happening. “But with simulation,” explains George, “you take that operational awareness and project forward not only to all of the possible future states of the system but also guide the system towards what you want to achieve.” With simulation, you determine where you want to go – the corporate KPIs or ROI targets that have been set – and then choose the best path out of millions of possibilities.

SIMULATION AND IOT PROJECTS

Before mounting a new IoT project, simulation twins can prove incredibly useful in setting strategy, making operational choices, and determining whether achieving the project goals is possible, and how. A company like Cosmo Tech, explains George, allows a decision maker to determine just what they can achieve in a new IoT project before that project even gets started. He suggests thinking about applying goal seeking simulation as part of a three-step process. “Step one, have a great idea of what you want to do. Step two, model the whole environment. Step three, take advantage of goal-seeking simulation to achieve your KPIs”.

VALUE FOR NEW AND ESTABLISHED PROJECTS ALIKE

Simulation is “super helpful” at the beginning of a project, says George, but its use should not be confined to planning and strategy alone. AI-guided goal seeking simulation digital twins can add value to established projects, too, whether by raising operational awareness or improving overall efficiency. With simulation it is possible to identify bottlenecks and discover new efficiencies in existing approaches. “I can increase production by three or four percent,” says George, “and find those next five perfect in efficiency savings in an existing solution.” Simulation, he concludes, is not just for ground-floor projects but established ones, too.

THE FUTURE OF DIGITAL TWINS, SIMULATION, AND AI

Five or ten years ago, George tells Chacon, the sort of modeling and simulation technology that Cosmo Tech offers was only within the realm of “super advanced experts” that could combine simulation with AI effectively. Today, however, “companies like Cosmo Tech are really democratizing this space so that anyone of any sort of skill level can take advantage of AI-guided simulation.” He compared it to the emergence of GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 generative AI built on top of large language models (LLMs) but with a crucial difference. Where GPT-4 is prone to invent or hallucinate when it doesn’t know something, that’s far from ideal when working in an industrial environment. With Cosmo Tech’s AI-guided simulation, you don’t hallucinate an outcome in an uncertain future, you set a goal and determine the optimal way to achieve it, and that’s the future of the convergence of AI, digital twins, and simulation.
