Skipton’s next sheepdog sale has a solid line-up

An 89-person catalog entry for Skipton Auction Mart’s summer working sheepdog sale on Tuesday, June 14 – this is an online timed format with live auctions – includes 36 fully broken dogs, 30 partly broken and 23 unbroken dogs.

There is a particularly strong Irish entry, complemented by others from across England, Wales and Scotland, as well as the Isle of Man, plus four dogs from a handler in Finland .

Leading trainers and trials riders are represented again, including Welsh legend Kevin Evans, from Brecon, who has had such a big impact on live and online sales of Skipton sheepdogs in recent years, regularly topping the prizes sales with his own dogs, among them several at five-figure sales, some setting new world records, while others from his breeding in different hands who are also listed for sale have also achieved solid prices.

Kevin has two dogs born in early 2021 completely broken, the first a female dog of his own Derwen Doug, a European Nursery Champion and double Welsh and International Crossbreed Champion, and a full sister to a Welsh Nursery Champion. The female dog has puppies expected in July from a solid stallion.

The second is a son of his Welsh Royal Champion, Tanhill Glen, who continues to leave such a strong imprint on Evans’ breeding and previous top prizes at the North Yorkshire venue. Kevin also has a part broken dog in August 2021, still by Derwen Doug, while his father David offers a 12 week old unbroken red and white puppy by his son’s Red Spot.

From Northern Ireland, Seamus Gormley, of Kilcreen Sheep Dogs in County Derry, has a strong hand, including six six-month-old unbroken dogs from the same litter, plus a pair of completely broken dogs, plus a part broken. All are related to top-notch trial dogs, including champions.

Donal Mullaney, of Co. Donegal, who has sold promising young dogs to Skipton, some at world record prices, is represented by a ten-month-old unbroken son from Tanhill Glen, while locally interest swirls around three fully broken 2020 dogs from Oakworth dog handlers Philip Mellin and Atkins Sheepdogs.

Finland’s representative, Mustajoentie’s I Dodd has two fully broken entries, a 15 month old dog and a 2020 female dog, plus a pair of unbroken puppies from the same litter. All contain lines of proven breeding and test dogs from Evans.

Managing Director and Auctioneer of Skipton Auction Mart, Jeremy Eaton, said: “The power of the online auction system has been well illustrated in previous auctions by the fact that we have been able to match hounds from dog handlers domestic and foreign with buyers from all over the world.

“The upcoming sale again offers a comprehensive selection of fully broken, partially broken and unbroken dogs, both for farm work and as trial prospects, to suit all tastes and budgets.”
