Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ‘The Lost Daughter’ wins top prizes at 2022 Spirit Awards

The lost girl was the big winner at Sunday night’s 37th Film Independent Spirit Awards, taking home three statuettes for Best Feature, Best Director and Best Screenplay. A cool younger cousin of the more traditionally heavy-handed movie award ceremonies, the Spirit Awards honor films that cost less than $22.5 million to make, meaning Oscar favorites love Belfast and power of the dog were not to be taken into consideration. The evening, hosted by husband and wife duo Nick Offerman and Megan Mullaly, proved to be an emotional event, with The lost girl director Maggie Gyllenhaal accepting her awards through tears. “I love independent cinema,” she said. “I grew up making independent films.” Also emotionally affected was soul summer director Questlove, who accepted the award for best documentary. “I’m not going to cry now, I’m not, I’m not,” he said. Best International Feature Film went to Japanese Language drive my car, also nominated for the first prize at the next Oscars. Simon Rex (red rocket) and Taylor Paige (Zola) won Best Leading Actor awards, with Paige saying, “Wow, I’m in shock. I wrote something because I’m not eloquent and I’m drunk. Offerman and Mullaly’s hosting duties included saying they hoped Putin would “fuck off and come home” and asking the audience to raise their middle fingers in a “Spirit Awards salute”.
