Mac Jones: Bill Belichick did a great job explaining what we want to do offensively
As Patriots training camp kicks off, some of the team’s offensive mysteries begin to be solved.
Several team pacing reporters said senior football advisor/offensive line coach Matt Patricia was clearly relaying plays to quarterback Mac Jones via walkie-talkie during Wednesday’s practice. This is in line with what has been stated by several reports, that Patricia will take over these tasks in 2022.
Jones obviously plays an important role in the execution of these pieces. Head coach Bill Belichick said this week he’s seen “dramatic improvement” in Jones as the quarterback enters his second season. Jones said Wednesday he liked the way Patriots staff worked together to teach this year’s program.
“I think Coach Belichick did a great job explaining exactly what offense we want to do,” Jones said, via NESN’s Zack Cox. “And Matty P has seen so many different defences, with Coach Belichick, so they combine their knowledge of how to attack defence, and that’s something that really stuck with me. They’re great guys – and [quarterbacks] coach [Joe] Judge – and they all bring this different energy to the room when they present.
“They’re all trying to get us to work together, and that’s the most important part, that we’re all on the same page, no matter who’s talking, who’s making the decision on the game and so on, that that I love.”
Jones went on to add that he was grateful to have his input on how the offense is shaping up.
“At the end of the day, players play and coaches coach, and you want to listen to the good coaching you can get from three coaches who have all been head coaches,” Jones said. “They’ve seen a ton – a ton – of football, and that’s what I’m just trying to figure out.
“But I feel like they listen to the players. “Hey, we like that concept.” ‘Okay, let’s try.’ And then if they want to put something else, they explain the “why”, and that’s the important part for me: to understand why we are doing something. And then from there, as a gamer, my job is to go run the games.
Jones had a strong rookie season, completing 67.6 percent of his passes for 3,801 yards with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. The Patriots will need more Jones to be a real contender in the competitive AFC. Time will tell if Belichick’s unorthodox method of building his offensive team in 2022 will work.
