If you’ve been thinking about getting a new dog so you are not alone – Kennel Club figures show that the number of people looking for puppies has increased by around 8% from the lockdown in 2020.
But with 221 different purebred dog breeds to choose from, there is a lot of thought to be done before selecting the latest four-legged addition in your family – whether you want one. big dog, friendly and family dog, or cross.
Different breeds of dogs also tend to have very different personalities – some dogs are leery of strangers and are happier staying home with their families.
Others are happy to get along with everyone – both human and canine – and thrive on meeting new people and making new friends.
Here are 10 of the most sociable dog breeds, according to data from the American Kennel Club.
Probably the most popular dog in a given park is a Golden Retriever. This breed loves its family, but it still has a lot of affection left to shower on anyone else it meets on any given day.

The Labrador Retriever is the UK’s most popular dog for good reason – it has a wonderfully sociable temperament. In fact, a potential problem with Labradors is that they are too fond of people, having a hard time keeping their distance if someone is afraid of dogs.

All three poodle sizes – standard, miniature, and toy – are also sociable. In fact, the only way to make a Poodle more social is to breed them with a Labrador or Golden Retriever, creating the super sociable Labradoodle and Goldendoodle.
