Dog breeders warned to pay attention to these rules or face six months in prison

If you are lucky enough to have a dog with a litter of puppies, you will know the enormous responsibility that comes with it.

The coronavirus pandemic has seen a huge increase in demand for dogs, with the price of puppies skyrocketing.

But breeders are warned about puppy litter laws – and face a jail term of up to six months if they break them, WalesOnline reports.

Government figures show that 560,000 puppies are born in England each year, and according to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, 88% are born to unlicensed breeders.

Becoming a licensed breeder means proving puppies are well cared for and happy, and unlicensed breeders across the country are selling dogs to inappropriate premises and separating puppies from their mothers before they’re ready.

So if you are looking to breed your dog, or if your pet has gotten pregnant and you don’t know what to do, here is some advice on who needs a breeding license and how to get one.

Do i need a breeding permit?

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, you will need a breeding license if you run a business that breeds or advertises dogs for sale, or if you breed three or more litters per year and sell the ‘one of the puppies. In Scotland it is five or more litters.

Your town hall will be able to tell you more about the costs and details, but your permit will either be valid for one, two or three years.

Basically, if your bitch gets pregnant once or twice, you won’t have to worry about a breeding permit, but if it happens three times a year, or if you advertise the puppies for sale. , you will need a license to ensure the welfare of dogs and puppies.

“This includes showing that dogs are – kept in appropriate housing, provided with adequate food, drink and bedding, exercised regularly, transported in safe and comfortable conditions, protected in an emergency, such as a fire, and protected from pain, injury, suffering and disease.

What happens if I breed dogs without a license?

If you or a business breeds dogs without a license, you could go to jail for up to six months or receive an unlimited fine.

You could also get an unlimited fine if you violate the conditions of your license.

So if your female dog or another member of your household accidentally gets pregnant twice in a year and you have sold the puppies, it is best to have them spayed or consider getting a breeding license, as a extra reach per year could get you in trouble.
